First and Last Day of school Flags

🎉📚 Celebrate the First and Last Day of School with These Fun Printable Flags! ✂️

Hi! I’m Rubí, a special education teacher and creator of educational materials on this blog I lovingly named Paper, Scissors, and Many Ideas. Today I want to share a very special resource I designed with those unique and unrepeatable moments in mind that mark each school year: the first and last day of school. 🎒

As a teacher, I know how exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—the first day can be: meeting new students, building connections, setting the environment, and helping everyone feel safe. I also know how emotional the last day is, when we realize how much our students have grown, learned, and shared with us. That’s why I created these decorative pencil- and notebook-themed flags, perfect for making both of these moments even more memorable.

What’s Included?

This resource includes two different designs:

  • A pencil-shaped flag, full of vibrant colors.

  • A notebook-themed flag, perfect to represent all the hard work of the year.

Each design comes in two versions:
🖨️ A color version, ready to print and use.
🎨 A black-and-white version, so students can color, personalize, and assemble their own flag.

Once printed, you can glue a stick or pencil to the back, and voilà! You have a fun flag to celebrate the first or last day of school. 🎈

How to Download the Flags

At the end of this post, you’ll find the direct link to download the flags in PDF format. Just print, cut, and enjoy!

How Do I Use It in My Classroom?

Let me share a story that always warms my heart. In one of my first-grade groups, many children arrived on the first day nervous—some were even crying as they said goodbye to their parents. That day, I had prepared the flags in advance and left them on each child’s desk with their name written on them and a decorative pencil to use as their “first day magic wand.”

When they saw them, their faces lit up. They approached with curiosity and excitement. One of my students, who rarely spoke, quietly said, “It’s pretty, teacher!” Others excitedly began coloring the black-and-white version, and several asked, “Can I take it home?” 💕 It was a wonderful way to break the ice, start conversations, and create a sense of belonging from day one.

Similarly, on the last day of school, we used the flags for a small farewell ceremony. I took pictures of them with their personalized flags and later printed them so they would have a tangible memory of that special day. It was so meaningful that several parents even wrote to thank me for the detail. 📷✨

Why Do I Create These Materials?

As a special education teacher, I’ve often seen the need for visual, engaging, and accessible resources that help my students connect with their emotions and their school environment. These materials don’t just decorate the classroom—they create experiences, memories, and most importantly, motivate.

I firmly believe that education should be inclusive and accessible. That’s why all the resources I share here on Paper, Scissors, and Many Ideas are completely free. I want other teachers like you to be able to bring these ideas into your classrooms without worrying about cost. 🎁
